For me, a hand is the linchpin of communication. Not only because I wave it wildly while talking, but mainly because almost everything you see around you is ultimately created by human hands. In the process of making this series of sculptures, I let my hands speak as much as possible.
The sculptures on display are part of the ‘MANUS’ series. Here, the hand literally takes the place of the head. The hands, cut out of the flat surface, in combination with the negative space from which they are constructed, form characters. I started playing with these characters. I dressed them and brought them into contact with fellow sufferers. This created dialogues and relationships, sometimes intimate, sometimes cackle, power-hungry, drunk, philosophizing, chaotic but also contemplative, questioning and, of course, probing. And now exhibited together.
