“For me, hands stand for communication. The image of the two hands revealed itself when I was thinking about how I see a stereotypical bum: as someone sitting on a rug, totally powerless really. Raising his hand, and someone else putting money in that. A totally non-equal action in fact. I wanted to make that equal and literally give it a twist. You can also sit in it so that you can start the conversation. Something that will happen a lot at BAKKIE 040, I hope.”

BAKKIE040 is a new start for (former) homeless people. In the new coffee bar they are trained as baristas and they gain valuable (catering) work experience and contacts. In return, they get a roof over their heads. Once their lives are back on track, it’s the turn of the next baristas on the street.
BAKKIE040 is the result of making a stand together against homelessness. An initiative that saw the light of day thanks to a lot of people who lend us and the city a warm cup of coffee. MAN/US symbolizes this great Eindhoven collaboration.
This special living and working project got off the ground thanks to the everybodyonderdak.nu collection campaign. The aim of the campaign was twofold: to draw more attention to the growing problem of homelessness and to raise enough money for BAKKIE040.
The campaign was a great success. In total, more than 180 well-known and less well-known Eindhoven residents literally gave the fight against homelessness a face. Residents and companies from Eindhoven donated no less than €179,000 in a short period of time. That amount has fully benefited BAKKIE040.
